I have buttons by color in drawers of storage units and the same with bigger drawers of thread. I have zippers divided by size and type and put into shoe boxes for easy retrieval. Or you could look at the spice and other kitchen storage solutions for creative ways to store small notions like charms, glitter, and buttons. We arrived two years ago, and my Workroom was an afterthought. I shoved boxes inside and just shut the door until the rest of the house was unpacked, and we were more settled. The side entrance may have allowed visitors to access the Office for business without passing through the formal entertaining and family spaces. First, as with everything else, I determined the best functions for each drawer. The desk holds my Cricut and printer, and has three drawers. It replaces a hot mess of a makeshift table with a file trunk stowed underneath.
The desk top is generous, too, which leaves plenty of room for my Cricut and my printer — neither of which are small. Let’s also throw in the fact that cases and cases of The Nice List arrived to be shipped out late last week. Yes, I have to keep working in this room while I’m doing this makeover. There’s no shutting the door and just walking away! So, I am trying to keep the chaos as confined as possible, and this week’s projects made a big impact in the room in short bursts of time.
Light up SignYou can fix this by creating an ironing pad for your cutting table. You can place the ironing pad on top of your cutting mat and then tuck it away when you’re ready to cut again. If you don’t have a dedicated cutting table, you can place your ironing pad on your dining room or kitchen table. You can build your own if you need more sewing area than what a premade desk can provide. A great DIY option is to set up two sawhorses and then place a large pane of glass or wood on top of them.
The sewing room portion of it is on the front side of the house, and the bedroom and bath areas are on the back side of the house. In the picture above, the blue side of the room is our bedroom area. I debated the paint color to use here for literally weeks before I finally went with my initial instinct and painted everything in a shade of vivid teal.
And consolidating materials gave me storage containers of all kinds which could be repurposed in other places and ways. I am part of a Freecycling group, and I’ve been able to give away a bunch as well. And in the end, I am confident that what I have left is useful and will spark joy in the many creative pursuits I take on in this room. Ultimately, having a room that is functional and beautiful sparks joy — far more than any individual item might. My newest space is half of my master bedroom. Our house layout is kind of unique in this house in that our master bedroom is huge and runs the full depth of the house from front to back.
Maybe you like to embellish your creations, and you have countless notions cluttering up your sewing space. You can place a cabinet or shelving unit with cubbies under or above your table to store your sewing supplies or fabric stash. Another option is to mount racks to hold your thread bobbins, ribbon spools, or sewing notions. One drawer holds all of my Cricut tools and supplies. In each drawer I put a cardboard box to hold smaller items — also lined with wallpaper.
